LIAR, LIAR

"I have always supported a woman's right to choose," said Vice President
Gore in Wednesday's Democratic debate in New Hampshire. That's an old lie
Gore, who earned an 84-percent rating from the National Right to Life
Committee during his House career, has said it plenty of times before. But
this time he added a little detail, a lie within a lie: "Early in my
career, I wrestled with the question of what kinds of exceptions should be
allowed to the general rule that Medicaid should also pay for this
procedure."
Gore actually voted on many occasions for the Hyde Amendment. In other
words, he didn't "wrestle with the question of what kinds of exceptions to
support" vis a vis Medicaid funding he didn't support any exceptions.
Twice he voted to allow rape and incest exceptions, but other times voted
against them. In 1984, he supported a civil-rights bill to declare "the
term 'person' shall include unborn children from the moment of
conception." Also, in a letter to a constituent that year, he wrote: "I
have strongly opposed federal funding of abortions. In my opinion, it is
wrong to spend federal funds for what is arguably the taking of a human
life. ... It is my deep personal conviction that abortion is wrong. ...
Let me assure you that I share your belief that innocent human life must
be protected and I have an open mind on how to further this goal."
Why can't Gore simply say that he was once pro-life, but he's changed his
mind? That's the truth. Instead he chooses to keep on lying.
BOOK NOTE

He may be a liberal, but Jim Hightower has given his new book a pretty
good name: If the Gods Had Meant Us To Vote, They Would Have Given Us
Candidates. The cover features 10 small mug shots of White House seekers,
including three who have already dropped out (Elizabeth Dole, Orrin Hatch,
and Dan Quayle). Missing entirely: Gary Bauer. But Alan Keyes made the
cut!
TURNOVER

As Bill Bradley tries to go from the NBA to the White House, Doug Sosnik
has decided to leave the White House for the NBA. The aide to President
Clinton, who currently holds a job once occupied by George Stephanopolous
and Rahm Emmanuel, will depart within a few weeks.
THE BIG GAME

NR's fearless prediction: St. Louis Rams 27, Tennessee Titans 24.
