[The Washington Bulletin is] "an entertaining mix of reporting and sharp political analysis." --Vin Weber

RECORD KEEPING
Listen to Lamar Alexander for more than a few minutes these days and he makes clear his opposition to bilingual education. It’s one of the issues on which the GOP presidential candidate intends to differentiate himself from frontrunner George W. Bush, a supporter of bilingual education. (Others include racial preferences, which Alexander opposes, and militarizing the border, which he supports). Jim Boulet of English First, however, says that Alexander had a "dismal record on official English matters as Secretary of Education." Says Boulet: "When Alexander had the power to do something about bilingual education, he didn’t. Now that he doesn’t have the power to do something, he’s against it. Sound familiar?" Boulet has a point. But this kind of growth we like.

THE TAXMAN
Dick Armey’s web page now features a tax calculator that provides a rough-and-ready estimate of how much various tax cut proposals would save individuals. By answering a few basic questions--income, marital status, number of dependent children, state of residence--Armey’s automated service will reveal savings. It also provides other key information, such as what your salary would be if your employer didn’t have to fork over the FICA tax. Visit the site at http://www.freedom.gov/taxcut.calc.asp.
