12:59 p.m. EDITOR'S NOTE: This piece appears in the July 4, 2005, issue of National Review. Transcript: CALLER: “Yes, is it me?” LARRY KING: “Do you have a question for Michael Jackson, caller?” CALLER: “Yes. Yes, I do. Hello, Michael.” MICHAEL JACKSON: “Hello.” CALLER: “I just want to say that I saw your show last month, during your European tour, and I thought it was fantastic. Just fantastic!” MICHAEL JACKSON: “Thank you.” CALLER: “So theatrical. Just wonderful. My wife and I thought it was great.” MICHAEL JACKSON: “Thank you very much.” CALLER: “Do you have any plans to get into acting?” LARRY KING: “Good question. What kind of movie part would a Michael Jackson want to do? Or even, could a Michael Jackson do?” MICHAEL JACKSON: “What does that mean, Larry?” LARRY KING: “Well, I mean, you’ve got a . . . unique look.” MICHAEL JACKSON: “And what does that mean?” LARRY KING: “I’m just saying that they’re probably not going to put you in the next ‘Bourne Identity’ movie.” MICHAEL JACKSON: “As a matter of fact, we’re talking to some people right now about doing some theater work. Performing in a play.” LARRY KING: “Really? Wow.” MICHAEL JACKSON: “The theater really is my first love, Larry.” LARRY KING: “What’s the name of the play?” MICHAEL JACKSON: “‘The Vagina Monologues.’ Have you heard of it?” LARRY KING: “Umm . . .” MICHAEL JACKSON: “Obviously we’re adapting it a bit for me.” LARRY KING: “Well, right. I mean, of course.” MICHAEL JACKSON: “You know, music. And dance.” LARRY KING: “What drew you to this particular piece?” MICHAEL JACKSON: “Are you kidding? Being in a play like that is a surefire way to score with the ladies.” LARRY KING: “Um . . . okay.” MICHAEL JACKSON: “And boy do I love the ladies.” . . .
