McCain — well, the back of McCain's head, at least — appears in "Lifetime", one of Kerry's new biographical ads, as the announcer says, "He joined with John McCain to find the truth about POWs and MIAs in Vietnam." (Slate's Jacob Weisberg observed that the line creates the impression "He worked with John McCain to try to rescue the POWs who were left behind in Vietnam," when the reality is, "He and McCain weren't trying to find lost POWs and MIAs in Vietnam. They were trying to prove there weren't any and thereby put the Rambo fantasy to rest.") Some GOPers are wondering just why the head of the president's reelection campaign in Arizona is appearing in his rival's commercial, and whether the Kerry campaign is trying to imply a McCain endorsement where there is none.
