KERRY'S WINNING TEAM IN MISSOURI
Today the Kerry campaign proudly announced its Missouri campaign co-chairs: Dick Gephardt, Tom Eagleton and Jean Carnahan.
Dick Gephardt is a retiring House member who came in fourth in the Iowa caucuses earlier this year, narrowly edging Rep. Dennis Kucinich of Ohio. Since 1994, he has been Minority Leader of the House, and has led the Democrats' campaign to retake the majority in 1996, 1998, 2000 and 2002. He has not quite succeeded in those efforts.
Tom Eagleton brings a fresh face and youthful vigor to the Kerry-Edwards effort, recognized nationally as George McGovern's running mate in 1972, eventually replaced with Sargeant Shriver. He last won statewide in 1980 with 53 percent of the vote.
Jean Carnahan knows a lot about what it takes to be elected in Missouri. She was elected... no, wait, she was appointed senator in January 2001. But she succeeded in winning 48.7 percent of the vote in 2002, which was almost more than challenger Jim Talent's 49.8 percent.
