A. Small joined KCM Investment Advisors, Greenbrae, Calif., in 2001 as
a principal with primary focus on investment strategy and marketing. Previous
to September 2000, Small was the treasurer of the University of California
and was affiliated with the Board of Regent's Treasurer's office for more
than 28 years. Prior to her appointment as treasurer in 1996, Small served
as associate treasurer for 15 years. As treasurer, she was responsible
for the internal management of all investable assets of the corporation,
including the University's Defined Benefit Retirement Plan, three Defined
Contribution Plans for employees that included six funds, and the University's
endowment fund and cash assets. In addition, she was responsible for cash
and banking activities and external finance activities of the corporation.
While at the University, Small was a board member for 15 years and vice
chair for ten years of the University of California Retirement System
and a long time member of the Gifts and Bequests Review Committee. As
of August 2000 the University's investable assets totaled $58 billion
versus approximately $1 billion when she joined the Treasurer's Office
in 1972. Small is currently a board governor of the Association of Investment
Management and Research (AIMR) and advisory board member of the Emerging
Markets Growth Fund and Capital International, Inc., and has also served
on the advisory boards of several emerging-market private-equity funds.
Before joining the treasurer's office, Small was assistant portfolio manager
in the Pension Trust Unit at Bank of America, San Francisco. She earned
her BA in economics from Marymount College, Tarrytown, New York.
